Common Reasons Parents Seek Therapy for Their Child

Every child struggles sometimes, but additional support may be helpful when concerns persist, interfere with daily life or leave you unsure about how to help. Parents often reach out when their child is experiencing:

  • Anxiety, fears or frequent worry
  • Low confidence or negative self-talk
  • Perfectionism or fear of making mistakes
  • Frequent frustration, outbursts or difficulty coping
  • School stress, avoidance or behavioural concerns
  • Friendship difficulties, bullying or social challenges
  • Difficulty expressing or talking about feelings
  • Grief, family changes or other significant transitions

Therapy That Fits Your Child

Children vary in how they communicate, build trust and respond to support. Jennifer does not expect every child to sit and talk directly about difficult feelings or experiences.

Drawing on her training in play therapy, Jennifer may use conversation, therapeutic games, creative activities and play-based techniques depending on the child’s age, interests and needs. These methods give children different ways to communicate and participate in therapy.

Working Together with Parents

Parents and caregivers are important partners in child therapy. Jennifer invites you to share your concerns, observations and relevant background so she can better understand what your child is experiencing in different parts of their life.

The level of parent involvement will depend on your child’s age and needs. When appropriate, Jennifer may provide parent check-ins, discuss general progress and offer practical ideas for supporting your child at home, while also respecting the child’s need for privacy and trust within therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long are child therapy sessions?

Child therapy appointments are 50 minutes. The exact structure may vary depending on your child’s age, attention span and needs.

Will I be involved in my child’s therapy?

Parent involvement depends on the child’s age, needs and circumstances. You may be invited to share information, participate in occasional check-ins and receive general suggestions for supporting your child at home. Jennifer also protects the privacy needed for children to develop trust in therapy.

How many sessions will my child need?

There is no set number that is right for every child. The length of therapy depends on the concerns being addressed, your child’s needs and how they respond over time. Jennifer will review progress with you and discuss recommendations as therapy continues.

How much does child therapy cost?

The fee is $180 for a 50-minute therapy session. A receipt is provided after payment.

Is child therapy covered by insurance?

Many extended health plans include coverage for services provided by a Registered Social Worker, but plans differ. Check whether your policy covers an M.S.W., RSW and whether a referral is required. Receipts can be submitted to your insurer for possible reimbursement.

Is virtual child therapy available?

Virtual therapy is available across Ontario. Whether it is suitable will depend on your child’s age, needs, comfort with online sessions and ability to participate. Jennifer can discuss this with you during the consultation.

What ages do you work with?

Jennifer works with children at different developmental stages. Contact her to discuss your child’s age and concerns so she can determine whether her services are an appropriate fit.

How do I get started?

Book a free consultation to briefly discuss what you are noticing, ask questions and determine whether Jennifer’s services may be a good fit for your child. A consultation does not commit you to beginning therapy.
